Ze! on Rocker Repro

dear diary,

I’m Rocker Repro’s first ever Artist of the Month …. the blog pays a lot of attention to kick-ass lady artists like Lady Gaga and M.I.A., so it feels great to be featured on there. Boeja!

rockerrepro

“Have you ever been to Kuala Lumpur? I think I can guess the answer to that question. But if you do ever visit, there’s one musicianista that will definitely catch your attention.  Ze! isn’t just someone riding the electropop craze.  She’s been into it for quite a while.  With influences like Madonna, Róisín Murphy, M.I.A., Peaches, and Le Tigre, it’s clear that she knows what’s up when it comes to good electro music.  Her fashion style is straight out of your wildest party dreams, and it’s clear she isn’t afraid to express herself through her clothes.  She’s even opened for the likes of Chicks on Speed, who are practically legends as far as fashion-fused music goes.” – Rocker Repro.  (read the full interview here.)

Don’t they remind us of M.I.A.? Available here.

back to the hood

dear diary,

I thought i’d be artistic today and play around with M.I.A.‘s pic i found on an old mixmag – where she was named one of 2008′s best not surprisingly. And I must be a lousy fan, as i only just found out about her record label N.E.E.T. which has signed Rye Rye and Afrikan Boy. Good to know becoming a mom doesn’t stop some gals from being awesome – provided you already are.

corinne stevie the illustrator

dear diary,

Meet Atlanta-based musician/artist, Corinne Stevie. Love the choice of colours that make em whimsical yet somewhat melancholic at the same time. And, of course the zebra is way too adorable :)

Q&A with WELIKEIT.indie

dear diary,

I’m on Welikeit.

“It is my pleasure to introduce her. If you are into innovative ladies like M.I.A., Santigold & Madonna, then this psychedelic girl will turn into a favorite. If you digg the style & the music, read the Qs & get to know her! Hopefully we’ll get to hear more from her.

Describe Ze! in 3 words.

    Loud, Colourful, Boisterous.

How many instruments to do you play?

I play the keyboard, guitar and drums horribly. So 3!

Worst live show experience?

In 2005, soon after releasing my debut album I was invited to open for the Malaysian Idol. So I was very excited, I hired 4 dancers for the first time, practiced my dance routine, made my own outfits, traveled 5 hours to get to the show only to be greeted by a tired bunch of middle-aged working crowd shouting ‘Who the hell are you? You’re not the Malaysian Idol’.

First record you ever bought and where did you buy it?

Malaysian boy band KRU’s album from some record store in KL.

Last illegal download?

    Madonna’s Like a Virgin – it’s my current ringtone.

What are you listening to right now?

Nadia Ali’s track – dont know the title.

What posters did you have on your wall as a kid?

    KRU. I was a die-hard fan.

Name one song youíd hate to have stuck in your head.

    Rihanna’s umbrella.

Name 3 things you need when you travel.

    Money, Passport and Sanity.

What is your favorite thing you own?

The star pendant I wear at all times, my parents gave me the pendant when I turned 21. To me, it symbolizes my beautiful past and where i’ve come from, the blessings of my present and most of all, the hopes and dreams for my future.

When you are out on the town, what is your drink of choice?

At a cafe, i’d have a latte. In a club, I’d get a virgin colada. And no, I dont drink but I get drunk ;)

Stupidest thing you’ve done in the last 12 months?

    Fall in love

Complete this sentence: In the future

never again will I fall for someone who can’t dance.

Tell us a fact about yourself that probably nobody knows.

    I wore braces when I was 14.

What’s next?

Touring with Madonna would be nice :)

End.”

Ze! on Charts in France

dear diary,

I am featured on Charts in France today… how fabulous! I am aware that the first commenter decided to say ‘pas terrible’, but hey, at least he felt the need to say something. So thanks for saying SOMETHING. It has made my day! :)

– Nikolas LENOIR

I babelfish-ed this, and it translates to;
“Sharing its life between Brussels and London, Zé! is originating in Malaysia. The young singer is also author and type-setter. Recognizing itself in artists such as Lady Gaga, Yelle but also M.I.A., Santigold and Madonna, Zé! is ready to conquer l’ Europe. Zé! (to pronounce “zay”) is a young artist of Kuala Lumpur. Collaborating with the Belgian producer Ruben Debusschere, the singer written and a music well with it composes in which it is recognized, however influenced by Lady Gaga, Yelle, MIA, Santigold, New Young Pony Club, Peaches but also Madonna. Its songs électropop (” I Am Glam” , ” Candy” , ” Servant boys I Like” …) are integrated in a coloured universe and eccentric which n’ is not without pointing out Lady Gaga and Yelle. L’ artist n’ in is not with its blow d’ test and n’ the success of its colleagues did not wait to make her music. Many participations in publicities, with a trio RNB but also of many musical collaborations allowed him s’ to affirm and to launch out in solo. A first EP ” My Make-Believe” in 2003, a first album ” Shameless” in 2005 allowed to make known itself but also d’ to be named at prices encouraging the young artists. Its new album should leave at the end l’ summer. The first extract ” I Am Glam” is d’ now and already available.”

yes, i’m a ripoff

dear diary,

This is interesting. No matter what you do, there will always be a small bunch of people who decides to not like you just because it’s easier not to. Because, i’m sorry i was born looking somewhat similar to M.I.A., like, if i were born white or yellow and dressed exactly the way she did i’m pretty sure we wont be having this conversation. However, I’m glad you’ve noticed she’s been one of my biggest influences. But, why not a Madonna ripoff? I know i’ve been wanting to be her since i was 5. In fact, I would prolly wanna be her more than I wanna be MIA. But then i aint blonde nor am i the fairest of them all. So why not Peaches, who sings a lot more about sex/attitude than politics. Or New Young Pony Club or CSS? I write about the lighter things in life – like boys and partying. I’m so not into politics, to begin with, and ‘Boys I Like’ was recorded in 2006. And, MIA’s ‘BOYZ’ was released in August 2007 so unless i’m her / diplo’s BFF i doubt i wouldve been able to steal that track. Not to mention there are a gazillion songs out there about boys – in fact, i got the idea to write Boys I Like after listening to a song on the radio about girls. I dont even know the band. And, um, this neon/trash/electro look isn’t just worn by MIA alone, people. The same way if i decide to put on an S&M outfit doesnt necessarily mean i wanna be Rihanna.

Every band has their influences. And i have mine.

p/s: The comments on my story is more than that on Rihanna. Funny that, I must’ve done something right :)
